Hillingdon Facts
The London Borough of Hillingdon, located in West London, boasts a rich history and a unique blend of urban and rural landscapes. Spanning from Heathrow Airport in the south to the Hertfordshire border in the north, Hillingdon is home to a diverse community, vibrant local culture, and a fascinating past. In this article, we delve into the intriguing history of Hillingdon, while uncovering a little-known, amusing story that is sure to surprise and delight.
Historic Facts:
- Ancient Beginnings: The history of Hillingdon dates back to the Iron Age, with evidence of human habitation found in the area around 700 BC. Throughout the centuries, Hillingdon has seen the rise and fall of Roman settlements, Saxon villages, and Norman conquests, with each era leaving its unique mark on the region.
- Royal Connections: In medieval times, Hillingdon was a popular hunting ground for royalty, as it was rich in game and close to Windsor Castle. Henry VIII, in particular, frequented the area, and it is believed that he met Anne Boleyn in the vicinity of Eastcote House, now part of the Borough of Hillingdon.
- The Great Barn: One of Hillingdon’s most iconic historical landmarks is the Great Barn in Harmondsworth, built in the early 15th century. This impressive structure is one of the largest and best-preserved medieval barns in England, and it has been described as the “cathedral of Middlesex” due to its majestic size and architectural significance.
- The Grand Union Canal: The Grand Union Canal, completed in 1805, was a vital transportation link for goods and people during the Industrial Revolution. Stretching from London to Birmingham, the canal runs through the heart of Hillingdon, with the picturesque town of Uxbridge serving as a prominent stop along the route.
- Heathrow Airport: Hillingdon is home to Heathrow Airport, one of the busiest airports in the world. Originally a small airfield called the Great Western Aerodrome, it was requisitioned by the government during World War II and transformed into RAF Heston, a base for fighter planes. After the war, the airfield was converted into a civilian airport and has since grown into the sprawling international hub we know today.
A Funny Story: The Curious Case of the Swakeleys Gargoyle
Tucked away in the quaint village of Ickenham, part of the London Borough of Hillingdon, stands Swakeleys House, a magnificent Jacobean mansion built in 1638. Although the historic estate is known for its elegant architecture and picturesque gardens, it also harbors a peculiar secret that few are aware of – the Swakeleys Gargoyle.
In the early 20th century, during routine maintenance work on the mansion, a stonemason named Charles Perkins was tasked with replacing several deteriorating gargoyles that adorned the building’s exterior. As a practical joke, Perkins decided to carve a new gargoyle in his own likeness, complete with a cheeky grin and a mischievous twinkle in his eye.
Upon discovering the unusual gargoyle, the owner of Swakeleys House at the time was initially outraged by the unconventional addition. However, the gargoyle’s impish charm soon won him over, and the sculpture was allowed to remain in place. Over time, the story of the Swakeleys Gargoyle became something of a local legend, with many residents of Hillingdon delighting in the tale of the stonemason’s prank that became a permanent fixture of the historic mansion.
