In the early 20th century, during routine maintenance work on the mansion, a stonemason named Charles Perkins was tasked with replacing several deteriorating gargoyles that adorned the building’s exterior. As a practical joke, Perkins decided to carve a new gargoyle in his own likeness, complete with a cheeky grin and a mischievous twinkle in his eye.
Upon discovering the unusual gargoyle, the owner of Swakeleys House at the time was initially outraged by the unconventional addition. However, the gargoyle’s impish charm soon won him over, and the sculpture was allowed to remain in place.
