For the most part whilst performing my magic most spectators are open to the magical experience. There are always going to be people who don’t like magic and for whatever reasons they do not want to watch it. That is fine with me as everyone has their own beliefs on magic and what they want to watch or experience.
Working as one of the many Magicians in London I have met 100’s of different types of people, but they basically boil down to two types.
- Those you want to enjoy the magic
- Those you want to work it out
There is also a very small group of people typically ladies with an analytical mind who always say “Magicians are annoying“
I have spoken to many people about this and when they say annoying what they really mean is they have to know how everything works, and seeing a magic trick no matter how simple really annoys them as they have to know.
The majority of people watch magic and enjoy the experience and like to be amazed and accept the trick, have no idea how it was done and then move on.
The group of people who say magicians are annoying cannot accept that their signed card went back into the pack, vanished and then planted itself inside a kiwi fruit to be cut open during the end of the routine.
They have to discover the method of how it got there, and when I tell them it was magic that annoys them even more.
So what happens now is that person (despite the fact that I have really annoyed them) now wants to watch the trick again so will either just watch from a distance as I perform to the next table / group or they will follow me.
I actually find this very complimentary to my skills as it means they have experienced something that they cannot explain, some people accept it as magic and others just have to know.
So this person who said magicians are annoying is now watching me perform the routine for the second time. This will have one of two outcomes.
1: They will catch me and see how the card transported itself to another location
2: They will become even more annoyed as they have now seen it twice and it has fooled them even more.
I must say that option 2 what usually happens.
So now they have seen the routine twice and you can see their head is starting to spin. They will now go back to their group and start processing what they have seen.
Usually at the end of the evening they will stop me and say “You have to tell me how you did that trick!”
This will be normally followed by their husband / partner (As I said it is normally a lady) saying this is going to keep them awake tonight!
The lady will usually finish with “I have really enjoyed your performance and there is no doubt you are very good at what you do, I like you as a person but I still stand by my original statement that “Magicians are Annoying!”
This does not happen every time I perform but once every few months I encounter this and it really gives me a buzz as I know I have performed that trick very well.
There is a place for magic and the last thing I want to do is be annoying, if I am performing in a restaurant and a couple are enjoying a romantic meal together the last thing they want is an annoying magician coming over trying to impress them with his card tricks. I really enjoy performing to people who want to see my magic and fully respect those people who don’t.
Do you find magicians annoying? Do you think Magicians are evil? Do you think Magicians are fake?
