There are thousands of individual magic tricks or effects in the world, however every single trick is based on one of 8 principles in magic. If you count every published variation, magic books and magazines contain tens of thousands of documented tricks, and the real number of unique routines created by magicians over the centuries is likely hundreds of thousands or more.
Magic tricks list
- Appearance (Production) – something appears from nowhere.
- Vanish – something disappears.
- Transformation – one thing changes into another.
- Transposition – two objects switch places.
- Restoration – something broken or torn is restored.
- Penetration – one solid object passes through another.
- Levitation (Anti-gravity) – something appears to float.
- Prediction (Mentalism) – the magician appears to know the future or a spectator’s choice.
For example:

- Making a coin disappear = Vanish
- Turning a silk scarf into a cane = Transformation
- The “cups and balls” effect often uses Transposition
- Restoring a torn card = Restoration
